Keeping Your Pet Safe This Holiday Season

The holiday season is a time for family, friends, and fun, but it's also a time when pet hazards are everywhere. From toxic decorations to dangerous foods, there are plenty of ways your four-legged friend can get into trouble this time of year. But don't worry; at Hickory Grove Animal Hospital, we're here to help. Read on for a list of pet hazards to avoid this holiday season.

Decorations

From Christmas trees to Hanukkah candles, there are plenty of holiday decorations that can be dangerous to pets. If you have a cat, keep an eye on them around Christmas trees. Cats like to climb trees and could ingest the tree's needles, which can cause gastrointestinal problems. If you have a dog, make sure they don't eat candles. Eating just a small amount of candle wax can cause gastrointestinal blockages.

Dangerous Foods

Human food is another common hazard during the holidays. Chocolate is one of the most common culprits. Dogs especially are attracted to the sweet smell and taste of chocolate, but even a small amount can be toxic to them. Other foods to keep away from pets include grapes, raisins, onions, and garlic. These foods can cause everything from vomiting and diarrhea to kidney failure in pets. Avoid sharing fatty foods, like gravy and turkey skin, too, as they can cause pancreatitis. If you're having a holiday party, make sure your guests know not to feed Fido or Fluffy any tidbits from the table.

Holiday Plants

Other hazards to watch out for are holiday plants, such as poinsettias, holly berries, and mistletoe. These plants can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and even heart arrhythmias in pets if ingested. If you're decorating your home with these plants, make sure they're placed out of reach of curious pets. Or, better yet, find a pet-friendly alternative.

Conclusion

The holiday season is a wonderful time of year but it's important to be aware of the potential hazards that exist for our four-legged friends. By taking some simple precautions, you can help ensure that your pet has a happy and safe holiday season. If your pet needs to be seen by a veterinarian in Charlotte, we are here for you.
