Summer Pet Safety: Tips from a Charlotte Vet

nature-3191875_640-1

Summer is in full swing, but sadly, sunny summer days and pets don’t always mix. As the temperature rises, knowing how to protect your pet from things like heat stroke and dehydration is crucial. At Hickory Grove Animal Hospital, our experienced team is here to help. Keep reading to uncover a few useful summer pet safety tips from a Charlotte vet!

Don't Take Your Pet With You

Your pet may love going for rides, but you shouldn't leave them alone in your car during hot weather. It takes as little as 30 minutes for the inside of your car to reach a sweltering 120° on an 85° day. Leaving the windows open will not help, and parking in the shade doesn’t do much good, either. Even leaving your car running with the air conditioner on can be dangerous. Any car can experience mechanical problems, and it is possible for pets to unintentionally switch off the air conditioner or even bump the vehicle into gear. Leaving a pet alone in a vehicle is extremely dangerous and can turn deadly in an instant.

Make Sure They Are Consuming Lots of Water

Pets should always have unrestricted access to fresh water. This is especially important during warm weather. Make sure their water dish at home is always filled with clean, cool water. Bring water with you when going for a walk with your pet, as well.

Avoid Hot Pavement

The air temperature is not the only thing you need to stress about in the summer. Pavement gets really hot, too, and can burn your pet's sensitive paws. Black asphalt can be up to 60° hotter than the air temperature, and serious burns can occur within one minute of contact. When possible, it is best to walk your dog on the grass on hot days. When you must walk on a paved surface, check its temperature before letting your pet walk on it. If you are not able to comfortably hold your hand on it for at least ten seconds, it’s too hot for your dog to walk on. Buying a pair of booties for your dog is a great way to protect their paws when walking on hot pavement is a must.
