The Benefits of Digital Dental X-Rays for Pets

While often neglected, dental care is vital for pets. Without it, the vast majority of dogs and cats suffer from some degree of periodontal disease by the time they reach just three years of age. You may be able to notice things like yellowing teeth or foul-smelling breath, but much of the damage associated with periodontal disease takes place below the gum line. Unfortunately, it is impossible for you - or even an experienced veterinarian - to see damage in this area during a visual exam.

At Hickory Grove Animal Hospital, we rely on advanced digital dental x-ray equipment to peer below the gum line and provide appropriate care for our canine and feline patients. As one of the few area vets to offer digital x-rays for pets in Charlotte, we would like to take a few moments to share some of the many benefits of this technology.

What Makes Digital Dental X-Rays Better than Traditional X-Rays?

Digital x-rays allow us to clearly see your pet’s teeth and their internal anatomy. They also show the roots and the bones that make up the jaw and snout. While traditional x-rays show these things, too, digital x-rays are superior because they allow the vet to immediately see the results on a computer screen. The images can also be adjusted in a matter of seconds, enabling our staff to get a clear picture of exactly what is going on inside your pet’s mouth.

With digital x-rays, your pet’s risk of radiation exposure is significantly lower. While some radiation is used to capture the images, the risk of your pet being exposed to potentially harmful rays is virtually nonexistent.
